Timothy P. Doss

Board of Supervisors Candidate

My Ties to Mathews

My wife, Jennifer, and I moved to Mathews over 3 years ago from Gloucester, where we lived for 30 years. We had looked for the perfect place for several years, and as soon as we saw our property in Port Haywood, we knew we had found our home. We’ve been married for 31 years.

Our daughter, previously in the Coast Guard, and her husband, active Coast Guard, recently purchased a home in Mathews. We are blessed to have our 8-year-old granddaughter and 4-year-old grandson so close by.

My wife teaches at Mathews Elementary School, and our grandchildren will be attending school there. How wonderful is that?

Why I Am Running

I am saddened by the continued turmoil and divisiveness in Mathews. The Board of Supervisors requires effective listening and communication skills which are essential in making decisions that are best for Mathews and its citizens. I want to be part of a team that possesses these skills and one that encourages teamwork and cooperation. I would have the Board of Supervisors focus on what is best for Mathews County and its citizens. I see the need for our school system and first responders to be supported more. I want to encourage people to speak up about what they perceive as the needs for our county.

I want to ensure that Mathews remains the friendly place where people want to live, that encourages new business opportunities and attracts visitors to our beautiful county for shopping and relaxation. Everyone is so busy nowadays, but I think it’s important that we don’t become so busy in our lives that we don’t notice the negative changes in our county.

What Makes Me a Good Candidate

I have built a well-rounded career of more than 37 years in law enforcement which includes administration, uniform patrol, school resource officer, investigations, dispatch, courts/civil processes, deputy emergency services coordinator, and corrections. I worked for the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years, advancing through the ranks of Deputy to Chief Deputy. In 2010, I was appointed as the Superintendent of the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center which has approximately 75 employees. I have been in a command level position for the past 26 years. I have an extensive amount of experience dealing with multimillion-dollar budgets.

I also have extensive experience with multi-jurisdictional government agency administrations, working seamlessly with elected and appointed state and local government officials to provide public service.

My educational background includes an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts, a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology, and multiple leadership courses including the University of Richmond’s Professional Executive Leadership School and the 212th session of FBI National Academy.

I have a passion for public service and I lead through teamwork. I am strong believer in honesty and integrity. Over my career, I have acquired the skills needed to be an effective member of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors.

My Community Involvement

I seem to always find myself volunteering. I currently serve on the Board of Zoning and Appeals. I feel this is a worthwhile contribution to the county. We take on each issue on a case-by-case basis. It’s important for citizens to be able to be heard as they appeal any zoning violation.

I’ve served as President of the Gloucester Boys and Girls Club, I am the current President of the Virginia Association of Regional Jails, and I’m currently a member of the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Academy’s Executive Board of Directors. I have worked with the Middle Peninsula Northern Neck Community Services Board since 1990 and was a former member of their Board of Directors.

What the Candidate Team Can Do for Mathews

I think it is essential that the Board of Supervisors work together as a team. Every Board of Supervisors member and citizen of Mathews County will be on the team. It will be important for us to listen, do our research, and talk with citizens. If citizens feel they can approach us with their concerns, and we listen to their concerns, I know we can be successful at finding solutions. I am excited about the candidates that the Mathews Citizens for the Common Good have decided to support. If elected, I’m excited to see what we can achieve together.
